Critical Role of Digital Transformation and Cybersecurity Discussed at Workshop Held at BARÜ

At the workshop titled “Cybersecurity from Regional and National Perspectives: Current Status, Risks, and Solution Proposals” organized by Bartın University (BARÜ), the opportunities brought by digitalization and the accompanying cyber threats were comprehensively evaluated. The event was held in collaboration with the Bartın Provincial Police Department, Bartın Provincial Gendarmerie Command, Bartın Provincial Directorate of National Education, Sakarya University, Western Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA), and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organization (KOSGEB).

The workshop was organized within the scope of the specialization project titled “Establishment of a Cybersecurity Application and Research Laboratory,” in which Dr. Serkan Aksu from our Vocational School participated as a researcher. In the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Handan Ucun Özel, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design, emphasized that while the digital age offers significant advantages, it also brings serious risks. She highlighted that data security has become a strategic value in today’s rapidly evolving technological environment and that cybersecurity is no longer an option but a necessity. She also stated that the workshop would contribute to regional digital security by bringing together academic knowledge with the public and private sectors.

Vice Rector Yafes Yıldız pointed out that digital systems are now widely used in many aspects of daily life, making it essential for both institutions and individuals to act consciously in this transformation process. He underlined the critical importance of protecting data, ensuring the secure operation of systems, and strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructures, emphasizing that cybersecurity is a strategic issue for the country’s future.

The first session of the program, titled “National and Regional Cybersecurity: Current Status and Opportunities,” was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eyüp Burak Ceyhan. Presentations were delivered by Gökhan Akdağoğlu, Provincial Director of KOSGEB Bartın, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özçelik from Sakarya University, and Dr. Şahin Baş, Coordinator of the BAKKA Bartın Investment Support Office. This session covered public support for young entrepreneurs, domestic security solutions, and mentorship and innovation programs.

The second session, titled “Solution Proposals and Future Roadmap,” was moderated by Prof. Dr. Ümmühan Avcı. Speakers included Kadir Kağan İnaloğlu and Muhammed Temli, coordinators of the BAKKA Cyber Homeland Program, as well as Necati Hamarat from the Cybercrime Department of the Bartın Provincial Police. They shared ongoing projects aligned with Türkiye’s digital sovereignty goals and current methods for combating cybercrime.

The workshop concluded with a general evaluation following the Q&A session.

Students from the Computer Technologies Department provided technical support during the workshop, while many students also attended as participants, demonstrating strong engagement.
